How to find the new Common Course Number

Starting in Fall 2025, California community colleges are adopting a Common Course Numbering (CCN) system (per AB 1111).

Bakersfield College began transitioning some courses to CCN starting Summer 2025. The purpose of adopting a statewide Common Course Number (CCN) system to streamline credit transfer between institutions and help students make informed course selections that support degree completion. Some courses at BC will have a "transition number" if the subject code changed (e.g. MATH to STAT) or if the course is a new course.

This matrix below provides the old BC course numbers, the transition number, and the new CCN.  The courses may be listed as the old or new numbers, depending on when and how the schedule is viewed.

Definitions

  • Subject Code: Four-letter abbreviation (for example, ENGL for English)
  • Course Type Identifier: CCN courses begin with C but other courses do not (for example, C1000 vs. B1A).
  • Course Number: Standardized 4-digit number (for example, 1000 vs. 1A).
  • Course Specialty Identifier: Some courses have additional characters at the end of their course number, such as:
    • E = Embedded support
    • L = Lab-only course
