English for Multilingual Students

The English for Multilingual Students program welcomes local bilingual/bicultural students seeking to improve their language skills, as well as English language learners from around the world. The program is designed to equip English learners with language skills required for academic work at the college or university level.

The mission of the English for Multilingual Students (EMLS) Department is to help our students develop critical thinking skills as well as become fluent speakers, listeners, readers, and writers of the English language in order to succeed in and contribute to the academic, professional, and social settings of their choosing.

Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOP&S)

EOPS is a state-funded program that serves students from low-income, educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. Services include academic, career, and personal counseling, peer mentoring, financial aid advising, scholarship information, transfer assistance, grant checks and other support services.

The CARE component offers additional grants and/or services to full-time students who are single parents, AFDC recipients, and have at least one child under the age of fourteen. Participants must qualify for financial aid.

Learning Communities

Learning Communities provide linked classroom experiences to help students establish a strong academic foundation. In a Learning Community, a group of students takes courses together, becoming a support network for each other and with the participating teachers. Students use discipline area texts in the reading class to develop reading skills using meaningful materials. One such community is Umoja ASTEP. (Also see BC Class Schedule)

Library Workshops

The Grace Van Dyke Bird Library hosts a series of research workshops each semester to help students learn how to conduct research properly and succeed in their courses.

Workshops are free, and are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Math Learning Center

Taking OR Planning to take a transfer-level math class & just need a refresher? Are you looking for math-learning assistance and support?

Do you have a schedule that requires you to not come to campus every week? Maybe you just need help with some background math skills, to support your current math class.

Consider enrolling in a Self-Paced, Non-credit, HYBRID course in the Math Learning Center!

If you are interested in "walk-in" tutoring, you can come to GS 8 for in-person tutoring. It is located in General Science Room 8.

If you cannot physically come in, then enroll in the Math B99NC - 73839 course OR email the MLC staff at mathlearningcenter@bakersfieldcollege.edu to receive the link to the Zoom meeting.

MESA

MESA Community College Program (MCCP) is one of the country’s oldest programs that provides academic support to educationally disadvantaged students so they can excel in math and sciences studies and graduate with degrees in engineering, science and technology.

MCCP is a rigorous academic support program that strives to increase the number of educationally disadvantaged community college students who transfer to four-year institutions and earn a degree in math-based, science-based, engineering or computer science fields.

The MESA Center is located in the Science and Engineering building room 46.

STEM

STEM students are those majoring in one of the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and are in calculus-based STEM classes.

Student Success Lab

The Student Success Lab provides students with assistance and NEW computer technology.

Tutoring Center

The Tutoring Center is a proven student success service that provides FREE tutoring to all currently enrolled Bakersfield College Students. Our one-on-one peer tutors are trained and certified students who can assist you with many Bakersfield College courses. Assistance with course content, required papers (at any stage) and/or academic skills are available through drop-in and scheduled appointments for most BC courses.

Many department offer free workshops to students to assist you with your academic success. From help with registering for classes, Financial Aid applications, and transferring to 4-year colleges and universities to study skills, writing, and research techniques, there is a workshop to help you. Writing Center

Our Writing Center is open to assist students across campus with all types of writing projects at any stage of the writing process. Bookscouter

For selling old books from college, you can use this site. Just type your book's ISBN into the search bar and the site will connect you with more than 25 of the best-paying and most reputable buyback companies online.

EdReady

EdReady assists students in preparation for college-level math. An assessment is given to identify which area of math the program can help students advance. Students can then practice through online problem sets.

Microsoft Office 365 FREE Student Edition

OpenStudy

OpenStudy allows students to participate in study groups online. Students are able to ask questions in any subject or get assistance in homework assignments. Students can build relationships, communicate, and collaborate with other students. Students will also develop the ability to help others, explain concepts, and construct solutions.

Dropthought for Education

Students and professors interact using an app and online dashboard. The app allows students to give feedback to the professors about the lecture or subject and connect with them on a one-on-one basis.

Student Lingo

Student Lingo allows students to interact with on-demand workshops, action plans, and valuable resources focused on helping students achieve their academic, personal, and career goals. Workshops can be purchased individually or in packages.

AfterCollege

AfterCollege assists students in finding jobs post-graduation. Students are matched with jobs their using major and personal interests.

Email To SMS Email Address List (email to text)

Many students use texting instead of email, Faculty can forward the first 160 or so characters of an email to the students' phone using the students' phone's SMS "address". Long emails will be shortened when converted to txt msgs. That is the 10-digit number followed by their carrier's SMS gateway. Here's a list of some popular SMS gateways:

Trade Pal

Tradepal is a real-time marketplace that makes it convenient to trade and exchange with other people in and around your college campus. You can adjust your browser preferences to discover listings like textbooks, study groups, events, tickets or rideshares. When you find what you need, send an in-App chat to your counterpart to ask questions, make arrangements and close the deal.

NetTutor: Online Tutoring Service

BC has partnered with NetTutor to provide online tutoring support to students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in the following subjects: EMLS, English and Writing, Humanities, and Mathematics. Tutoring for other subjects is available during scheduled times. See the NetTutor Schedule for a comprehensive schedule. All of the NetTutor tutors have a four‐year degree from an accredited university and a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in any subjects for which they will be providing tutoring. To get started, students should click on the NetTutor link on the left sidebar of their Canvas class. I have attached a Student Guide to help students navigate NetTutor.
