Are you interested in enhancing your leadership skills, but limited on time and funds? Then the Bakersfield College Applied Leadership program is for you!

What is Applied Leaderhship?

Applied Leadership explores leadership theories and strategies through a creative and engaging curriculum. The program is designed for people with various leadership backgrounds and experiences starting with no leadership exposure to those in leadership positions. The courses are cost-effective and can be completed in as fast as 3-terms (summer, fall, and spring). Candidates who complete the courses will be eligible to apply for a certificate of completion in Applied Leadership.

The Value of a Leadership Skills Certificate

According to Harvard University, a leadership skills certificate can help you grow and advance professionally during various stages of your career. Many colleges and universities offer Leadership Skills Certificate programs for a cost. Depending on the institution, you could be paying thousands of dollars. The Bakersfield College Applied Leadership Program offers noncredit courses, designed to be free of cost to you. Take advantage of this new program and start working towards your professional growth and promotion!

Learning to Lead

Program Background

The concept for this program was developed in collaboration with former Senator, Dr. Jean Fuller, and the Bakersfield College Education Department. Dr. Fuller is passionate about the educational opportunities available to residents of Kern County. Dr. Fuller has extensive leadership experience varying from educational, political, and organizational settings.

Applied Leadership Curriculum

Individuals enrolled in the these courses will learn how to apply leadership theories and strategies in their employment, education, and community. The curriculum is comprehensive, and each course will be taught in 8-week sessions, which allows students to complete the program quickly.

Applied Leadership suggested sequence:

  • Summer: EDUC B20NC
  • Fall: EDUC B21NC, EDUC B22NC
  • Spring: EDUC B23NC, EDUC B26NC

Wilfredo Cruz Jr.

Administrator of the Energy Program for Community Action Partnership of Kern (CAPK)

Wilfredo Cruz Jr. is the Administrator of the Energy Program for Community Action Partnership of Kern (CAPK). In 2023, the CAPK Energy Program has assisted close to 10,000 low-income families by helping them pay off approximately $11.8 million in utility costs and is on pace to weatherize over 200 homes.

Wilfredo has been involved in various nonprofits throughout his career, including: Prospanica, Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Active 20/30 Club of Bakersfield, and the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

He graduated from California State University of Bakersfield (CSUB) with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and is currently pursuing his Master of Public Administration. He is also a graduate of the Bakersfield Leadership Academy and the Bakersfield College Applied Leadership Program.

During his spare time, he has various passions which include going to live sporting events and music shows, cooking, performing, and traveling. He loves Bakersfield and looks forward to bettering the community that he calls home.
