Articulation Agreements

Many colleges have articulation agreements (also called transfer course agreements), which define which courses they consider comparable. BC has articulation agreements with University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), high schools, other California Community Colleges, and some accredited private and out-of-state colleges.

Course Articulation is the process of developing a formal, written agreement that identifies courses (or sequences of courses) on a “sending” campus that are comparable to, or acceptable in lieu of, specific course requirements at a “receiving” campus.

Types of Articulation Agreements

General education articulation agreements identify courses that will meet the lower-division general education requirements at a given institution such as CSU GE, IGETC or Cal-GETC.
Course-to-course articulation agreements determine if a specific course taken at one institution will satisfy a requirement at another college.
Articulation Agreements for major requirements are specific courses taken at one institution that will meet a specific lower-division major requirement(s) at the receiving institution.
Articulation agreements can also determine a course's transferability as elective units to a given institution.

High School Articulation

An articulated high school course is one in which a determination has been made between College and High School faculty that a course offered at the High School level is comparable to a specific community college course. Bakersfield College uses a form of Credit for Prior Learning called Credit by Exam to review, approve, and honor these articulation agreements. ASSIST.org

The ASSIST (Articulation System Stimulating Interinstitutional Student Transfer) website is the official statewide database and online resource that shows prospective California transfer students, via articulation agreements and transferability lists, how courses they complete at a community college may be used to satisfy elective, general education and major requirements upon transfer at a California State University, University of California campus, or a participating institution affiliated with the Association of Independent California Colleges (AICCU). For example, articulation agreements with CSU Bakersfield can be found on ASSIST.org.

Agreements on ASSIST.org can be viewed by department or major, depending on the institution. Students often find the agreements BY MAJOR to be most helpful. The ASSIST website also houses information on requirements necessary for transfer and admission to both the California State University (CSU) and the University of California (UC).

Transfer Admissions Guarantees (TAG)

The TAG Program provides students with a guaranteed pathway to six of the UC campuses (UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz). Requirements vary based on institution and major. If you meet the requirements for your institution and major, you are 100% guaranteed admission to that campus.

University of California Transfer Admissions Eligibility Course List

Completing the UC Transfer Admissions Eligibility Course list is the minimum requirement for admission eligibility; it does not guarantee admission nor does it guarantee that a student will be prepared and competitive for admission to a specific UC campus or major.

Campus-Specific General Education

Students may opt to follow the general education pattern specific to a university campus. Articulation agreements also exist between Bakersfield College courses and general education requirements at private colleges and universities.
