Campus Hazing Transparency Report

Bakersfield College is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and respectful educational environment for all students, employees, and visitors. The College strictly prohibits hazing and retaliation against any individual who reports hazing or participates in the investigation of a hazing complaint. 

In accordance with the Federal Stop Campus Hazing Act, which amended the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (20 U.S.C. § 1092(f)), Matt's Law Penal Code 245.6, and California Education Code sections 66305 through 66309, Bakersfield College publishes this Campus Hazing Transparency Report. Hazing prevention, reporting, investigation, and disciplinary procedures are governed by Kern Community College District Board Policy 5500 (Standards of Student Conduct), Administrative Procedure 5520 (Student Disciplinary Procedures), and Administrative Procedure 5400 (Associated Students Organizations and Guidelines for Student Clubs and Organizations). 

The Campus Hazing Transparency Report provides a summary of substantiated hazing incidents involving recognized student organizations, athletic teams, or other student groups that have been investigated and adjudicated through the College's formal conduct process. The report promotes transparency, accountability, and student safety by providing current and prospective students with information regarding organizations found responsible for hazing. 

Consistent with federal law, substantiated hazing incidents included in this report will remain publicly available for a minimum of five years. The report is updated on or before June 30 and December 23 of each year. 

Only incidents that have been fully investigated and resulted in a final determination that a violation of the College's hazing policy occurred are included in this report. The report is published in compliance with applicable federal and California law and does not include personally identifiable information protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) or other applicable privacy laws.

For each substantiated hazing incident, the report includes:

  • The name of the student organization, athletic team, or student group found responsible;
  • The date of the alleged hazing incident, when known;
  • The date the investigation was initiated;
  • The date the investigation concluded with a finding that a violation occurred;
  • A general description of the hazing incident, including the applicable policy violations and findings;
  • The sanctions imposed on the student organization, athletic team, or student group, including the effective and end dates of the sanctions, when applicable; and
    The date the College provided notice of the finding to the student organization, athletic team, or student group.

Students, employees, and members of the public are encouraged to report suspected hazing promptly. Reports of alleged hazing involving individual students are investigated in accordance with BP 5500 and AP 5520. Reports involving recognized student organizations are investigated in accordance with AP 5400. Bakersfield College will promptly review all reports of hazing and take appropriate action consistent with District policy and applicable law.
