Nurse Assistant Training Program (NATP)

The Nurse Assistant Training Program (NATP) course prepares the student to provide services to those who need health care. The student will learn the role of the caregiver, the healthcare environment, healthcare safety, adult needs in health and illness and basic care giving skills. The Nursing Faculty respects the individuality of students and recognizes that each student has different educational, experiential, cultural, spiritual, economic and social backgrounds and a unique support system. Upon successful completion of the NATP, the student is eligible to take the competency exam for a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA). A student who successfully passes the written and skills tests that are part of this exam is deemed to understand and be able to safely perform the job of an entry-level nurse assistant. This provides proof to the California Department of Public Health that the student has met the requirements for certification.


The mission of the Bakersfield College (BC) NATP is to provide basic patient care directed at the safety, comfort, personal hygiene, and protection of elderly, disabled, or injured individuals, and are certified as having completed the state training requirements. The program is committed to improving and advancing the health and welfare of our community by preparing competent, safe, healthcare professionals.

NATP Requirements

Students are required to show proof of a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) card. This BLS card must be valid at all times. This requirement can be fulfilled by completion of Medical Science B52 (MEDS B52) Basics Life Support for Healthcare Providers course.

Recommended Courses

MEDS B37 - Medical Terminology (previously MEDS B60) is highly recommended prior to taking the NATP course.

Essential Technical Standards

Bakersfield College nursing faculty have the responsibility to education and prepare students to become competent nurses who safely care for their patients and families using critical judgment, broadly based knowledge, and refined technical skills. Individuals interested in applying for admission to the programs should review the Essential Technical Standards to develop a better understanding of the skills, abilities and behavioral characteristics required to successfully progress in, and graduate from our programs. Physical Examination Requirements

A physical examination completed by a Healthcare Provider, of the student's choice, is required upon entering the Program. This is to demonstrate that a student is in good physical and mental health, and meets the Essential Technical Standards necessary to meet the course objectives. Appropriate immunizations and/or vaccinations are also required, and are performed at the student's expense.

Drug/Alcohol Screening

As a condition of enrollment into any Allied Health course with a clinical laboratory component, students are required to submit to, and pass a designated drug and alcohol screening at the student's expense. Additionally, students may be asked to undergo a drug and alcohol screening anytime during the semester. *Although the State of California has legalized cannabis use, it is still illegal under federal law.

Background Screening and Certification Eligibility

As a condition of enrollment into any Allied Health course with a clinical laboratory component, students are required to complete and submit a background check, at the student's expense.

  • Student must submit fingerprints for Department of Justice screening.
  • Student will need to provide a Social Security card/Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) card and a valid government issued photo ID.
  • Students are required to show proof of a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) card. The BLS card must be valid while enrolled in the NATP course.

Estimated Program Costs (Gainful Employment)

Students will be required to purchase uniforms, textbooks and selected equipment, provide transportation to off-campus clinical education sites and pay current college fees. Estimated Program Costs.

Licensure/Certification Eligibility

Students with misdemeanor and/or felony convictions may be prevented from receiving certification or licensure from the State. Anyone who would like clarification may contact the Department of Public Health at CNA@CDPH.CA.GOV

Nurse Assistant Training Program Curriculum

The NATP is organized into three major components: theory, skill attainment, and supervised clinical training. Students will complete a minimum of 160 hours of training to complete the program, 60 hours of theory and 100 hours of supervised training in the clinical setting. The curriculum is outlined in 16 modules, wherein lesson plans outline the knowledge, skills and attitude's (KSA's) students learn that are essential to the practice of nurse assistant. The clinical laboratory component provides the opportunity for application and integration of KSA's in providing direct client care.

NOTE: For those students interested in continuing their education and becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Registered Nurse, please refer to the prerequisites required for the Vocational Nursing program and Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program. You are encouraged to meet with your Health Science Advisor/Counselor.
