About the Fire Technology Program

The Fire Technology Associate in Arts degree at Bakersfield College is a two-year program that provides both the theoretical foundation and hands-on training needed for a career in the fire service. Students study fire behavior, fire prevention, building construction, firefighting tactics, emergency medical services, hazardous materials operations, and more. Coursework blends classroom learning with practical skill development.

Meets State Fire Marshal educational and training requirements for Fire Officer certification.

Meets State Fire Marshal requirements for Fire Fighter I certification and prepares students for the national registry exam and California EMT certification.

Developed for students seeking entry-level fire service roles or advancement within fire departments. The Bakersfield Fire Department requires an associate degree for candidates seeking promotion to battalion chief.

Prepares students for reserve or entry-level firefighter positions and provides minimum firefighter training.

Students with training in Fire Technology can pursue many career paths, including:

  • Firefighter – Respond to fires, medical emergencies, rescues, and hazardous situations.
  • Fire Inspector – Inspect buildings for fire hazards and enforce fire codes.
  • Fire Investigator – Determine fire origin and cause, often partnering with law enforcement.
