Prepare for a vital role in emergency response with Bakersfield College's Dispatcher Public Safety Basic Course, a three-week intensive program that meets California POST training standards for entry-level public safety dispatchers.

The Dispatcher Public Safety Basic Course satisfies the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) minimum training requirements for entry-level dispatchers. It is designed for individuals currently employed in public safety as well as students preparing to enter the field. This intensive three-week program is taught by Bakersfield College Public Safety Training Department instructors and experienced public safety dispatchers.

Course Description and Attendance Requirements

This course provides foundational training in the principles, procedures, and responsibilities of public safety dispatch. Topics include:

  • Ethics and professionalism
  • Criminal justice system overview
  • Workplace and radio communications
  • Telephone technologies and procedures
  • Community policing
  • Cultural diversity
  • Domestic violence
  • Missing persons
  • Critical incidents
  • Gang and hate-crime awareness
  • Law enforcement technology
  • Sexual harassment prevention
  • Wellness management and stress awareness

POST requires students to maintain a 95 percent attendance rate. Students who exceed allowable absences or miss unexcused time may be disqualified from the academy.
