Phlebotomy Technician Training Program Brochure
This course equips aspiring phlebotomists and those pursuing medical careers with the foundational knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes needed for interactions with various Healthcare Disciplines including the Clinical laboratory settings. Through hands-on practice, instructor guidance, and a clinical practicum, students build confidence in blood collection techniques. Key topics covered include communication, medical terminology, specimen collection, basic anatomy and physiology, and managing venipuncture complications. The curriculum aligns with National Health Career Association (NHA) standards, preparing students for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician Certification Examination.

The mission of our Certified Phlebotomy Technician Training Program is to provide a comprehensive and accessible learning experience that equips all students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and ethical standards necessary to excel in phlebotomy. Certified Phlebotomy Technician - 1 Requirements
Pre-requisite
MEDS B37 – Medical Terminology course must be completed at the time of application.
Students are required to show proof of a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) card. This BLS card must be valid at all times. This requirement can be fulfilled by completion of Medical Science B52 (MEDS B52) Basics Life Support for Healthcare Providers course.

Essential Technical Standards
Bakersfield College nursing faculty have the responsibility to education and prepare students to become competent nurses who safely care for their patients and families using critical judgment, broadly based knowledge, and refined technical skills. Physical Examination Requirements
A physical examination completed by a Healthcare Provider, of the student's choice, is required upon entering the Program. This is to demonstrate that a student is in good physical and mental health and meets the Essential Technical Standards necessary to meet the course objectives. Appropriate immunizations and/or vaccinations are also required and are performed at the student's expense.
Drug/Alcohol Screening
As a condition of enrollment into any Allied Health course with a clinical laboratory component, students are required to submit to and pass a designated drug and alcohol screening at the student's expense. Additionally, students may be asked to undergo drug and alcohol screening anytime during the semester. *Although the State of California has legalized cannabis use, it is still illegal under federal law.
Background Screening and Certification Eligibility
As a condition of enrollment into any Allied Health course with a clinical laboratory component, students are required to complete and submit a background check at the student's expense.
- Student must submit fingerprints for Department of Justice screening.
- Student will need to provide a Social Security card/Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) card and a valid government issued photo ID.
- Students are required to show proof of a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) card. The BLS card must be valid while enrolled in the NATP course.
Estimated Program Costs (Gainful Employment)
Students will be required to purchase uniforms, textbooks and selected equipment, provide transportation to off-campus clinical education sites and pay current college fees. See the Estimated Program Costs.
Licensure/Certification Eligibility
Students with misdemeanor and/or felony convictions may be prevented from receiving certification or licensure from the State. Anyone who would like clarification may contact the Department of Public Health at LFSphlebotomy@cdph.ca.gov.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician Training Program Curriculum
The Certified Phlebotomy Technician Training Program is organized into three major components: theory, skill attainment, and supervised clinical training. Students will complete a minimum of 108 hours of training to complete the program, 48 hours of theory, 20 hours Lab Skills Attainment and 40 hours of supervised training in the clinical setting. The curriculum is outlined in 2 modules, wherein lesson plans outline the knowledge, skills and attitudes students learn that are essential to the practice of a Certified Phlebotomy Technician.

Note: Fall/Spring class hours will be 4 hours per day, 2 days per week. Clinical site training (Externship) hours are typically 8 hours per day for 1 week (5 days). |
