The Music degree program at Bakersfield College is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in music theory, musicianship, and solo and group performance. The program is structured to prepare students for transfer to a four-year university, where they can continue their education and pursue a Bachelor's degree in Music or a related field. Students in the program will take courses in music theory, ear training, and applied music, as well as participate in ensembles such as the College Choir, Concert Band, Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, or Jazz Combos. Graduates of the program will be well-equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as music performers or to continue their education at the university level.

The Music Associate in Arts for Transfer degree requires Applied Music (MUSC B7) which consists primarily of individual instruction on an instrument or voice and is intended for music students with significant previous experience. This course must be taken and passed for 4 semesters to complete the degree. Auditions for students starting in the fall semester occur twice, usually in mid-May and again in August just before the fall semester begins.
