What is Journalism?

Journalism is a field of work that involves researching, investigating, and reporting on events, issues, and stories that are of public interest. Journalists gather information through interviews, observations, and research, and then use that information to write news stories, features, and other types of media content. The goal of journalism is to inform and educate the public about current events and issues, to provide a platform for different perspectives and voices, and to hold those in power accountable. Journalists work in a variety of media, including newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and online platforms.

Is Studying Journalism Right for Me?

An Associate Degree in Journalism can be beneficial for individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in the field of journalism or related areas such as broadcasting, public relations, or corporate communications. It can be particularly helpful for individuals who have a passion for writing, research, and storytelling and are interested in working in a fast-paced, dynamic, and ever-changing field. The program can also benefit individuals who want to develop their critical thinking, communication, and multimedia skills, as well as those who want to gain practical experience through internships or working on student-run publications or media outlets. Additionally, the program can be useful for individuals who are interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in journalism or related fields, as it provides a solid foundation for further study.

The Renegade Rip

Bakersfield College's student newspaper, the Renegade Rip, has been in existence for more than 80 years and continues its tradition as one of the top community college publications in the state. Students are instructed on professional standards and do all of the work, from beginning to end, in creating seven or eight biweekly publications each semester.

The students also maintain a 24/7 online edition, therip.com, and have produced three editions of the Dissenter magazine in the past two years.

The newspaper publishes in broadsheet form during the fall and spring semesters on a biweekly basis. It distributes 3,000 copies per edition.

The Associate in Arts in Journalism for Transfer degree is intended for those transfer-directed students who plan to complete an AA in Journalism because it guarantees admission to the CSU system (but not to a particular campus or major).

Journalism Careers

There are several careers that someone with an Associate Degree in Journalism can pursue, including:

1. Reporter - Journalists who write news stories for newspapers, online media outlets, or broadcast stations. They cover local and national news, political events, crime, and other topics.
2. Multimedia journalist - Journalists who report and produce content across various platforms such as print, online, television, and radio.
3. Public relations specialist - Professionals who work for businesses, nonprofit organizations, or government agencies to manage their public image, write press releases, and develop communication strategies.
4. Social media manager - Professionals who manage social media accounts for companies, organizations, or individuals to promote their brands or message.
5. Content writer - Professionals who write content for websites, blogs, or online media outlets.
6. Copy editor - Professionals who review and edit written materials, including news articles, advertisements, and other content, to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
7. Communications specialist - Professionals who work in various industries to develop and implement communication strategies that enhance the organization's image or brand.
8. Freelance journalist - Professionals who write stories or produce content for multiple media outlets on a contract basis.

Transfer Pathways

Graduates with an Associate in Arts in Journalism for Transfer from Bakersfield College may choose to continue their education at a university to earn a 4-year degree. Students with an Associate in Arts for Transfer degree “are guaranteed admission with junior standing somewhere in the CSU system and given priority admission consideration to their local CSU campus or to a program that is deemed similar to their community major” (Bakersfield College Catalog, Educational Options).
