Last week, the Native American Student Success & Support Services Program (NASSSP) at Bakersfield College hosted a pumpkin decorating event to celebrate the season and bring students together to fellowship and showcase their creativity.

The event took place in the NASSSP lobby on the second floor of the CSS building. All pumpkins and materials were generously provided, and students were able to decorate their pumpkin with paint, fabric, letter beads, and much more.

Christina Contreras, Educational Advisory in the NASSSP, was one of the coordinators of the event. “One of the purposes of the event was to bring students together, take a break from their studies and just enjoy this time of year,” she said. While the event creates a great environment for students to take a little break, she also believes there can be a greater impact overall. “When students are involved and engaged, or when they feel like they are part of a community,” she said, “they are likely to do better academically. So, we are trying to encourage.

Thank you NASSSP for putting on this event and building community at Bakersfield College. Throughout the month of November their department will be hosting a series of events celebrating Native American History Month. Please visit the BC online events calendar for more details.
