Throughout the year, Bakersfield College hosts a variety of events geared toward bringing together students, staff and community members for positive discussion, networking, and interaction. Earlier this week, BC hosted their second installment of Campus Equity Conversations (CEC), a series of events meant to create meaningful dialogue and positive connections. This month’s installment featured an all-student panel as they answered questions around the topic of Building Belonging at BC.

Gilbert Ayuk, Physics Professor at BC, was the MC for the event which included providing questions for the panelists around the day’s topics. Dr. Stacey Pfluger, Interim President and BC, welcomed everybody to the event. “Thank you for taking time and coming to this important conversation,” she said, “building community and building a sense of belonging is absolutely critical to each and every person on this campus – students and employees alike. So, thank you being here.”

After a brief introduction video about belonging and inclusion, Mr. Ayuk provided discussion questions for the panelists. The first question was “When did you feel like you belonged at BC?” Hunter Moore, current BC student, was the first to answer. “I feel like I belonged here at Bakersfield College over the last few years,” he said, “it kind of went hand in hand with getting involved in many campus organizations, including the student government association.” He also mentioned how he volunteered at the tutoring center, got involved with the Renegade Garden Club and the History Club, and served as Vice President of BCSGA. “It was those experiences – getting involved, building that sense of community with students, faculty and advisors that contributed to my sense of belonging here.”

Another BC student, Willow, shared a story of a conversation with a friend that helped them feel like they belonged at BC. “My friend gave me my inspiration to aspire to do something big,” they said, “and she would just keep pushing me and pushing me – more than I had pushed myself than ever before. Then she told me one day, ‘I am very proud of you.’  It was that affirmation that made a difference for me.” It was that connection with a fellow student that helped Willow pursue their academic goals.

After some more inspiring stories from the student panelists, the event concluded with a time of networking, and everyone was invited to enjoy some fresh pizza. Thank you to all the student panelists who shared their experiences and perspectives. We hope this event, and future CEC discussions, will help build a sense of belonging for current and future students.
