Thursday, March 12, 2026
In honor of Women’s History Month, Bakersfield College hosted a kick-off celebration this week in the Levan Center courtyard on the Panorama campus. The event featured guest speakers, a performing arts preview, the BC Cheerleaders, live Mariachi music, snacks, and more.
Dr. Stacy Pfluger, President of Bakersfield College and one of the speakers, welcomed everyone and expressed excitement for the kick-off and all the upcoming events at BC celebrating Women’s History Month. Later in the event, Trinity Matthews, current BC student and Student Life employee, shared her thoughts about the significance of Women’s History Month, “This month is dedicated to honoring and recognizing the resilient women that came before us,” she said, “and if you take away anything from today, let it be resilience. Know that you can do it – anything you set your mind to.”
The performing arts department then took the stage and did a few scenes to promote one of their upcoming shows taking place in April. The day concluded with light refreshments, socializing, and live Mariachi music!
Olivia Garcia, History Professor at BC, was also one of the guest speakers at the event. When asked about the Women's History Month events throughout March, she replied, “It’s an exciting time to celebrate and honor achievements of women in history,” she said, “But also, movers and shakers that are happening now.” She also talked about the themes for the events. “Our themes for this month are resilience and being rooted in change,” she said, “and I see resilience in a lot of our students, and they are an image of what we have seen women accomplish in the past. So, it’s about celebrating the past, but also celebrating them as well.”
Wendy Cordova, Director of Campus Engagement and Leadership at BC, helped coordinate the event and served as the MC. She also spoke about the importance of Women's History Month at BC. "The purpose of the WHAM Kick-Off is to officially launch Women's History Month programming at BC and bring the campus community together", she said, "Through storytelling, performances, and dialogue, the event celebrates the strength of women’s voices while encouraging students to reflect on how they can be leaders and changemakers in their own communities."
There are a variety of exciting and engaging events at BC throughout March celebrating Women’s History Month. Be sure to visit the BC online events calendar for more details.
