Each semester, the Art Department at Bakersfield College hosts a ceramics sale featuring art created by BC students in their art classes. It provides a great opportunity for students to showcase their artistic projects, help raise money for the Ceramics Foundation, and earn a little income for themselves as well.

The ceramics sale happens near the end of each semester on BC’s Panorama Campus and has been going strong for about ten years. This year’s sale is taking place December 3rd and 4th from 9:30AM-5:00PM in the courtyard of the Fine Arts Building.

Darrin Ekern, BC Art Professor and coordinator of the event, was excited to offer this opportunity for ceramics students. “I think this is a great opportunity for students to get excited about their artwork,” he said, “and to help them realize that their work is valuable.” He also explained that students get to keep most of the revenue earned by their art pieces, while some of the proceeds go to the Ceramics Foundation. The foundation helps provide scholarships, fund guest artists/speakers, help students attend ceramics related conferences, and more.

Ekern also emphasized how this event benefits the ceramic students. “It’s really nice for the students to earn a little income for themselves,” he said, “but it also makes them realize that the hard work they put into their projects has value. Each one of these events generates four to six thousand dollars – so it helps boost their ego, and some even realize they can do something creative to earn an income in the future.”

The Fall Ceramics Holiday Sale continues Thursday, December 4th, so come support the BC ceramics students by purchasing their handcrafted items. They make great holiday gifts, and every purchase directly supports student artists as they continue to grow their skills and creativity. Don't miss the chance to find a unique, one-of-a-kind piece while celebrating the talents of our Renegade community.
