Dedicated to preserving our collections heritage. Bethany Rice serves as director, head archivist and operations lead, overseeing the archives team with a focus on leadership, strategic planning, and day-to-day management. She is responsible for administrative coordination, external collaborations with the college, and the development and implementation of operational procedures that support the archives’ mission. With a strong commitment to preservation and accessibility, Bethany plays a central role in shaping the direction and effectiveness of the archives. They have two AAs one in history and anthropology also a BA in history and MLIS in library and information science. Their favorite thing to do in the archives is work with the archives team to preserve, organize, and promote the history of Bakersfield College
Committed to the conservation of our shared history. Katherine Loya is an Archives Assistant and Archives Lead who plays a central role in maintaining the structure and efficiency of the BC Archives. She oversees key administrative duties and leads efforts in filing, organization, and collection inventory management. With a strong focus on archival structure and accessibility, Katherine ensures that materials are properly maintained, cataloged, and readily available for research and preservation purposes. Her leadership and attention to detail are vital to the smooth operation of the archives. Katherine wants a masters in material sciences to focused on research and development of sustainable materials to replace single use plastics. They enjoy seeing firsthand the historical reports of Bakersfield College over the decades and being able to be a part of it.
Safeguarding history for generations to come. Deanna Rea is a Student Archives Assistant, They serves as a content researcher and writer for the archives, where they play a vital role in preserving and showcasing the rich history of Bakersfield College by producing well-researched historical articles. Deanna is majoring in Psychology and Studio Arts and would like to become a child therapist with a focus on art therapy. Deanna’s favorite project they have worked on is learning and writing about the architecture of Bakersfield College.
Ensuring our history is organized for the next generation. Cecil Dexter is a Student Archives Assistant. He is a multifaceted member of the BC Archives team, serving as a content writer and researcher dedicated to making historical materials accessible and engaging. He manages media communications, sharing the archives’ stories with a wider audience. In addition to his writing and research responsibilities, They also assists in daily operations and is cross-trained in multiple archival functions, making him a versatile asset in both public-facing and behind-the-scenes archival work. Cecil has an AA in Forestry and currently majoring in Pest Management. Their favorite project they have worked on is the Bill Thomas article and Women in STEM project. They love doing very research intensive projects, and it was such an honor to interview the women in the article and hear about the incredibly hard work they put in.
Preserving the stories that shaped us. Benjamin Fernandez serves as both Archives Assistant and Archives Lead, playing a pivotal role in the management and operation of archival initiatives. In this dual capacity, he oversees student workers, ensuring their contributions align with the goals of the archives. He is responsible for locating, preserving, and curating historical artifacts for events, ensuring materials are both accessible and preserved for future use. Benjamin coordinates event logistics, including scheduling and day-of operations, to ensure smooth and impactful archival presentations. He also leads the organization and maintenance of archival collections, supporting long-term preservation and discoverability. Additionally, he publishes and manages digital content for the archives’ web presence, enhancing public engagement and accessibility. His work ensures that both the physical and digital archives are effectively managed, celebrated, and shared. Benjamin is currently a Music Education Major, hoping to become a music teacher later in life. His favorite project he has worked on was the Marching Arts Acquisition Collection.
Supporting the preservation and care of the institution’s historical collections and artifacts. Monique Dhaliwal serves as an Archives Assistant and Lead Researcher at the BC Archives, where she plays a key leadership role in multiple areas. She heads the Newspaper Preservation Project, overseeing preservation strategies and research efforts to safeguard historical print media. As an Archives Lead and Preservation Consultant, Monique brings expert insight to the care and longevity of archival materials. She also actively supports public events and outreach initiatives, contributing her knowledge and leadership to both internal projects and community engagement. Monique is currently working on a master’s in library science and information with the goal to work permanently in an archives. Their favorite project they have worked on has been events and the newspaper preservation project
Supporting collection care and preservation. Angie Valenzuela is a student archives assistant. Angie’s role consists of handling and moving school artifacts for public school events and educating others on the school’s history. They are often described as being detailed oriented, so they are in charge of most organizational tasks such as school year books or school newspapers. Angie is currently working on their major in American sign language and anthropology. They hope to become an ASL interpreter and study and learn more about the cultures and languages differences in the deaf community. Their favorite part of working for the BC Archives has been sorting through the renegade rips and events
Manning events that display artifacts and articles for our college. Nestor Montelongo is a student archives assistant. Nestors assists with the operations and activities of the Bakersfield Archives through a variety of roles, including event support, organizational tasks, and collaborative projects. Cross-trained in multiple archival functions, aiding across departments as needed. Demonstrated adaptability in managing diverse and unexpected tasks, ensuring smooth workflow and successful project outcomes. Nestor is currently majoring in biology with the goal of going to med school and becoming a psychiatrist. Nestors favorite projects include working any events ranging from the performing arts combined concerts to the football games at BC, showcasing artifacts that reflect the rich history of the school.
