Bakersfield College Jazz and Commercial Music Academy Records New Album
Wednesday, August 3, 2022
BAKERSFIELD, CA - Bakersfield College's Performing Arts Department presented their annual Jazz and Commercial Music Academy this past week, the 2nd installment of the 5-day, tuition-free course. 26 students registered for this year's academy, building a strong foundation of knowledge needed for a career in music.
After 5 days of collaboration, the student musicians, with the guidance of five members of Bakersfield College's music faculty, produced an 8-track album of new music, entirely written, performed, and recorded by the students. The album is now available for purchase at BC Jazz Studies Bandcamp page. The proceeds from every sale will go to benefit the Jazz Studies and Commercial Music programs at Bakersfield College.
“The summer academy is such a rewarding, immersive experience for both the students and faculty,” says Jazz Studies director and Performing Arts Department Chair Kris Tiner. “It gives us a chance to talk about collaboration, persistence, and the satisfaction of developing a creative musical project all the way to the finished product. For most of these students, it's their first real taste of something they hope to be doing for the rest of their lives!”
“I was deeply moved and impressed with the commitment and confidence our students showed during the academy,” says Commercial Music program director Dr. Joshua Ottum. “Their willingness to take risks and be vulnerable inspired me as an educator and artist and I look forward to working with these students into the future.”
The album, simply titled “Jazz and Commercial Music Academy 2022,” is available for listening and purchase at the BC Jazz Studies Bandcamp page for $6.99. Album purchases grant unlimited streaming via the Bandcamp app as well as high-quality downloads.
