Bakersfield College

The Spring 2010 courses offered by the Institute are primarily designed to address the interests of those 55 and older, but they are open to all adults. They vary in length and subject and are outside the “credit” sphere of the college.

The Spring lineup includes a variety of courses, ranging from gardening to photography to jazz to soap making. We have tried to provide a curriculum that will appeal to the wide spectrum of interests of those living in our community. Please let us know if we have succeeded and what subjects and programs we might offer in the future.

In addition to the courses offered through the Institute, you may wish to consider the hundreds of regular BC classes that can be taken for credit or, with instructor permission, audited. Some of these are short term, one unit classes. Consult the BC Spring 2010 Class Schedule.  You can view it on-line at www.bakersfieldcollege.edu

Course materials and assignments

A few courses will include required or suggested books and/or other materials, sometimes expected to be brought to the first class session. In addition, some instructors may have reading assignments for that session. Therefore, after you register, you should go to www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/levaninstitute and look up your course to see if there is such an assignment, or if materials/books are necessary.  You can purchase your books or materials at the BC Bookstore or from any other source you wish.

Fees

Although the Levan gift covers most of our startup and overhead expenses, we must charge fees in order to recover our direct instructional costs as well as any special materials or transportation costs associated with a course.

Refunds

Generally, fees can be refunded until one week before the beginning of a course. Exceptions to this include courses for which transportation or other reservations, as well as materials purchases, must be made well in advance. An example of this is The Wonderful World of Wine.

Parking

Parking permits can be purchased on a daily basis at one of the machines in the student/public parking lots.
