Bakersfield College

Success & Equity on BCTV & Radio Shows

Josie Guillen and Danny MorrisonWith an emphasis on equity for all students, Bakersfield College has dedicated efforts and initiatives to serve students from various backgrounds. To help the community at-large better understand the options available and that there's a pathway for everyone at Bakersfield College, President Sonya Christian sought an innovative way to take educational information and inspirational stories to the general public. As a result of this forward thinking leadership, in 2016 Success and Equity on BCTV was born. Throughout 2016 and 2017, each hour-long episode provided important information on services benefitting students, as well as local educational success stories designed to inspire potential students to make their dreams of higher education a reality.

In 2017, Bakersfield College expanded efforts in a partnership with local radio stations including KBDS The Beat 103.9 and KMYX La Campesina 92.5. Driven by the mission to share with Kern County the various programs, initiatives, and support services available at the college, the on-air host invites various BC staff, faculty, and/or students to participate monthly. Each month features special populations who are traditionally either first-generation students or those who face difficult barriers to education. In honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, our premiere segments focused on our local African American population, featuring guests with amazing stories of success. Subsequent weeks spotlight veterans, Latino students and other special student groups, including Dream Act students, foster youth, and various topics.
