The Bakersfield College Concert Band (MUSC B10A) and Orchestra (MUSC B12A) perform a variety of music at several events throughout the year. They typically perform two concerts each semester. In addition to these events, both ensembles participate in the annual Performing Arts Combined Concert. In the summer, musicians from both groups may participate in the pit orchestra for the BC summer musical. The musicians in the ensembles range in age from high school students to octogenarians, including varying playing levels. Anyone with instrumental music experience is encouraged to join!
The BC Concert Band rehearses Tuesdays & Thursdays from 4:20 – 5:45 p.m. and is open to students of all majors, as well as community members and advanced high school students.
Prerequisite: Prior experience playing a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument.
The BC Orchestra rehearses Tuesday evenings from 6:00 – 9:10 p.m. and is open to students of all majors, as well as community members and advanced high school students.
Prerequisites: Prior experience playing an orchestral instrument.
Anyone interested in the BC Concert Band or BC Orchestra should contact Dr. Scott Dirkse at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Students will demonstrate their playing and reading ability for the instructor during the first week of classes. Placement will be determined according to each student’s ability and experience, and priority may be given to music majors in the Applied Music Program.
The number of wind players in Orchestra may be limited to the repertoire needs of a given semester. Additional musicians may participate in the class by special arrangement with the instructor.
Course audits are permitted if there is an instrumental vacancy that needs to be filled.
