Bakersfield College to Celebrate Topping Out of New Performing Arts Center
On Friday, January 24, Bakersfield College and SC Anderson will celebrate a milestone in the remodeling of Bakersfield College’s Edward J. Simonsen Performing Arts Center. The milestone, known as “topping out” celebrates the reaching of the highest point of construction on the building, and will be marked with an American flag and Bakersfield College flag.
In celebration of “topping out” on the Simonsen Performing Arts Center, Bakersfield College and SC Anderson will hold a brief ceremony at 11:45 a.m. to commemorate. Guests are invited to sign a steel plaque which will memorialize the event. A few key speakers will highlight the work and the plans for the new Simonsen Performing Arts Center at Bakersfield College.
Started in April 2013, construction on the Simonsen Performing Arts Center is a complete modernization of the 30,000 square foot building through the Kern Community College District’s Safety, Repair, and Improvement Bond. This modernization will convert the building to a Performing Arts Center with a new entry, lobby, and reception area, remodeled 450-seat indoor theater with stadium-style seating, a 100-seat black box theater, classrooms, offices, and music studios. The outdoor amphitheater will have a covered stage and shade structures.
Total cost of renovation to the Simonsen Performing Arts Center is $19.3 million and target completion is Fall, 2014. Planning for a grand opening celebration is currently underway.
