Commencement FAQs

Currently, May 2020 Commencement is postponed until further notice. Please note, conferral of degrees will still be posted on official transcripts 12 to 15 weeks after the end of the semester in which you applied. You can check your unofficial transcripts on InsideBC to see your degree pending status.

Students must file for graduation. To file for graduation, follow these steps:

  • Download and Complete the Candidacy for Graduation
  • Log in to InsideBC
  • Click on "Tools" on the top menu bar.
  • Select "MyDegreePath."
  • Check your Degree Works to make sure your catalog rights are stated and the major you are requesting is the major being evaluated.
  • Students whose major is not correct can choose to process a "What if Evaluation."
  • Under "Worksheets" click on "What If" to the left; choose your catalogs rights; choose the major you want to process and click the "Process What If" button on top.
  • Under "Degree Progress" you need to be at a 96% to file for graduation.
  • If your "Degree Progress" is under 96% you need to see a counselor.
  • Print your "MyDegreePath" and attach it to the Candidacy for Graduation Petition form. Turn them both in at the Admissions and Records office Window #6.

NOTE: A student completing their final coursework in the summer, but who would like to participate in the once a year May commencement ceremony, should file for summer graduation beginning April 7 to May 1.

Students who complete their degree requirements during the fall, summer or spring prior to the ceremony or who will complete them in the following summer, are eligible to participate. When you file for Graduation, you will receive notification about commencement.

No, diplomas are mailed to graduates. Attending the commencement ceremony will not affect receipt of your diploma.

Diplomas are mailed to graduates approximately twelve (12) weeks after the semester is over in which the student applied to earn their degree. Example, if you applied to earn your degree in Spring, your diploma will be mailed out 12 weeks after the semester is over.

Students who have completed at least 60 units in degree applicable letter graded courses, have taken at least 12 of those units at Bakersfield College, and who have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher are eligible for graduation with honors.

The honors designation will appear on the diploma and transcript as follows:

Grade Point Average Honor Designation
3.50–3.69 Cum laude
3.70–3.89 Magna cum laude
3.90–4.00 Summa cum laude

Records Office personnel will issue a gold tassel to the honor students at the cafeteria check-in area. A cumulative GPA of 3.50 after Fall 2017 is required to graduate with honors. (This does not include courses in-progress for the Spring 2018 semester). A $10.00 Cash deposit will be required at check-in for a gold cord. The money will be refunded upon return of the cord to the Office of Admissions and Records by May 30.

Graduates may purchase caps and gowns from the Bakersfield College Bookstore beginning April 17 or borrow them from our loaner program beginning April 30.

Yes, you may decorate your cap to show pride in your accomplishments. Please keep your decorations tasteful and respectful of others. No foul language allowed.

Free parking is available in the student lots at Memorial Stadium.

The commencement photographer will be at Grad Fair, April 9 and 10 to take pictures of you in your cap and gown. To schedule an appointment for portraits:

  1. Schedule your appointment
  2. Click "Schedule Your Sitting"
  3. Click "Cap and Gown"
  4. Select your school, and the time and date that works best for you

Be prepared to have your picture taken after President Christian hands you your diploma cover, by moving next to her, and facing the photographer. There is no time for posing.

Memorial Stadium is located on the Mt. Vernon side of the Panorama Campus. The address for Panorama Campus is 1801 Panorama Drive. From Highway 58, exit Mt. Vernon Ave and drive north. The Stadium and parking will be on the left near University Ave. Entrances for the parking lot can be found on University and Mt. Vernon with closest access at Christmas Tree Lane and across from Kern Schools Federal Credit Union. Directions for Memorial Stadium from Google Maps.

Students who file for graduation will receive an email prior to Commencement with details of where to go and what time on the day of Commencement.

Parking the day of Commencement is free. Graduates and guests may park in any of the student parking located on campus. There is ample parking in the student lots around Memorial Stadium.

The following items are prohibited and possession of these items can result in your removal from the stadium.

  • air horns/noisemakers
  • alcohol/drugs
  • balloons
  • bottles and cans
  • camera tripods
  • firearms/weapons
  • fireworks
  • outside food
  • selfie sticks
  • strollers
  • tobacco (including e-cigarettes)
  • umbrellas
