BC Jazz Ensemble Plays Monk

The Bakersfield College Jazz Ensemble directed by Kris Tiner celebrates the centennial of jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Sphere Monk. Monk was one of the architects of modern jazz and remains one of the most unique figures in all of American music. With a highly individual style characterized by a quirky charm, angular melodic twists, and unexpected dissonance, Thelonious Monk’s music exemplifies what jazz critic Whitney Balliet called “the sound of surprise.” This concert will feature big band arrangements of many of Monk’s lesser-known compositions, including several by Oliver Nelson from the 1968 album Monk’s Blues. Tickets are $10 general admission, $7 students/staff/seniors. Proceeds benefit the BC Jazz Program.
