When an achievement gap exists, institutions engage faculty, staff, and administration in developing and implementing strategic changes that ensure pedagogy and services are tailored to students’ unique needs. Colleges establish an educational environment where all students have the best opportunities to succeed. A commitment to equity ensures that institutions focus on achieving high rates of success and completion for all students, especially those who have traditionally faced the most significant barriers to achievement.” (Achieving the Dream, 2014)

  • Participants will understand the differences in definition and application between ‘Equity’ and ‘Equality’
  • Participants will Comprehend the Interrelation among Achieving the Dream, SSSP, and the Student Equity Plan Efforts, and how institutional efforts can be streamlined and synthesized
  • Participants will understand the next steps of transitioning from Achieving the Dream Planning Year toward an Implementation Plan (Year 2)
  • Participants will appreciate the value and process of proactively developing assessment methodologies to evaluate student success interventions

Kati Haycock, President, The Education Trust

Access to Success in America: Where are we? What can we learn from colleges on the performance frontier?

Kati HaycockKati Haycock is one of the nation's leading advocates in the field of education.

She currently serves as President of The Education Trust. Established in 1996, Ed Trust works for the high academic achievement of all students at all levels, pre-kindergarten through college. The organization’s goal is to close the gaps in opportunity and achievement that consign too many low-income students and students of color to lives on the margins of the American mainstream.

Known for years as a powerful force on education policy, Ed Trust is often described as “the most important truth teller” in American public education. But the organization also works hand in hand with educators and civic leaders in their efforts to transform schools and colleges into institutions that serve all students well.

Before coming to The Education Trust, Haycock served as Executive Vice President of the Children's Defense Fund, the nation's largest child advocacy organization.

A native Californian, Haycock founded and served as President of The Achievement Council, a statewide organization that provided assistance to teachers and principals in predominantly minority schools in improving student achievement. She also served as Director of Outreach and Student Affirmative Action programs for the nine-campus University of California system.

Kati Haycock speaks about educational improvement before thousands of educators, community and business leaders, and policymakers each year. She has received numerous awards for her service on behalf of our nation’s youth, and serves as a director on several education-related boards, including the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, The New Teacher Project, and the Hunt Institute.


Ron Head, Ph.D. - Data Coach, Achieving the Dream

Dr. Head is a Professor and Program Director at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC), where he teaches a number of courses, including one on institutional effectiveness.  He has extensive experience in institutional effectiveness, institutional research, and accreditation, having edited a volume in the New Directions for Community College series on institutional effectiveness, presented at numerous conferences, and consulted with a number of community colleges.  Prior to assuming his position at UMUC in 2013, Dr. Head served for 10 years as a special consultant on institutional effectiveness and accreditation at Tidewater Community College in Norfolk, Virginia, and prior to that, he served for nearly 20 years as Executive Director of Planning and Information Technology at Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville, Virginia.  He has also taught a number of doctoral education courses for the University of Phoenix, as well as undergraduate classes in English and computer science.  Dr. Head is a former president of the Southeastern Association of Community College Research (SACCR).

Educational Background:  Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Virginia; M.A. in English from the University of Virginia; B.A. with Honors in English, Washington & Lee University

John S. Nixon, Ph.D. - Leadership Coach, Achieving the Dream

Associate Vice President of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges

Dr. John Nixon retired as President of Mt. San Antonio College in 2011. As an Achieving The Dream Leadership Coach, Dr. Nixon works with Los Angeles Harbor, Pierce, and East Colleges, College of Southern Nevada, and Kern District's Bakersfield, Portervillle, and Cerro Coso Colleges. Dr. Nixon also serves as Associate Vice President of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.

Prior to his role with Achieving the Dream, Dr. Nixon has had both policy and management oversight responsibility for California’s largest single-campus community college district. Dr. Nixon started his tenure at Mt. San Antonio College in 2004 as Vice President of Instruction.  He oversaw all instructional programs and services, including seven academic divisions with 2,270 full- and part-time faculty members.  He later served as Interim President in July 2006 and immediately began expanding relationships and partnerships with local government, business, community, nonprofit, and educational organizations and leaders.

A 35-year veteran in education, Dr. Nixon previously served as Vice President of Academic Affairs at Santa Ana College for 12 years, where he supervised nine academic divisions as well as counseling services and learning resources.  He also served for a year as Santa Ana’s Interim President in 1998 and as Associate Dean of Humanities and Assistant Dean of Continuing Education.

Involved in community affairs, Dr. Nixon has served on the board of directors for the Orange County Community Health Care Clinics, the Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the Orange County Marine Institute. In addition, he has held statewide leadership roles, including co-chair of the System Advisory Committee on Curriculum, the statewide Basic Skills Advisory Committee, as President of the California Community College Chief Instructional Officers Association, as a Board member for the Chief Executive Officers for the California Community Colleges, and as a Commissioner with the Accrediting Commission for Community Colleges (ACCJC-WASC).

Educational Background: Nixon holds a bachelor and master’s degree in English from UC Irvine, and a doctorate in English from USC.
