Tips For Success

  • Review English, Reading, and Mathematics subjects that you will be tested on. Reviewing and studying will help improve your Assessment Test results, particularly if you have been out of school for a long time or if you have not taken coursework in English, Reading, or Mathematics for over a year. See Study Resources below for review sites and Assessment Test practice options.

  • Familiarize yourself with the type of test questions that are given on the Assessment Test. Sample test questions are available in the Study Resources section below. Understanding the format of the test questions can decrease your anxiety and help you focus on taking the Assessment Test.

  • Get a good night's sleep, have a light meal or snack and drink plenty of water before the test. Being dehydrated, tired, or hungry can hurt your performance on the Assessment Test. Take the test at a time when you are most alert.

  • Work carefully and at your own pace. The Assessment Tests are computerized and adaptive. This means that the test will change its level of difficulty based on your performance. The more you answer questions correctly, the higher your placement will be. You will be unable to change your answers once you have submitted them.

  • Answer every question. You are not penalized for guessing.

  • Do not rush. These tests are very important. You should plan to spend about 2 - 2.5 hours on the tests. Schedule your time wisely so that you do not have to rush to finish the test.
