The Fall 2009 courses offered by the Institute are primarily designed to address the interests of those 55 and older, but they are open to all adults. They vary in length and subject and are (with one exception) outside the “credit” sphere of the college.
The Fall lineup includes a variety of courses, ranging from gardening to photography to jazz to soap making. We have tried to provide a curriculum that will appeal to the wide spectrum of interests of those living in our community. Please let us know if we have succeeded and what subjects and programs we might offer in the future.
In addition to the courses offered through the Institute, you may wish to consider the hundreds of regular BC classes that can be taken for credit or, with instructor permission, audited. Some of these are short term, one unit classes. Consult the BC Fall 2009 Class Schedule. You can view it on-line at www.bakersfieldcollege.edu
A few courses will include required or suggested books and/or other materials, sometimes expected to be brought to the first class session. In addition, some instructors may have reading assignments for that session. Therefore, after you register, you should go to www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/levaninstitute and look up your course to see if there is such an assignment, or if materials/books are necessary. You can purchase your books or materials at the BC Bookstore or from any other source you wish.
Although Dr. Levan's gift covers most of our startup and overhead expenses, we must charge fees in order to recover our direct instructional costs as well as any special materials or transportation costs associated with a course.
Generally, fees can be refunded until one week before the beginning of a course. Exceptions to this include courses for which transportation or other reservations, as well as materials purchases, must be made well in advance. An example of this is The Wonderful World of Wine.
Parking permits can be purchased on a daily basis at one of the machines in the student/public parking lots.
Two courses in writing have been scheduled for the Bakersfield College Delano Center. These classes are, of course, open for enrollment to all but have been placed at the Delano Center for the convenience of those living in that area.

You will work with soft (4B) pencils, and woodless graphite pencils (4B), a grey kneaded eraser, one square stick of Charkole (brand name) and a newsprint pad, all available from the BC store or from other sources. You should have these with you on the first day of class. Lectures, discussions, and drawing experiences will comprise the total class time.

This is a class that is about helping you write those important memories. Al Naso tells you how to do it one step at a time.
This is a course for the beginner or someone who has been working on a memoir for some time and will present to the student the experience of the instructor's 20 years of personal memoir writing. Topics include: getting started with writing and planning; methods for recalling facts; gathering sources of information; inclusion of documents, art work, and photographs; use of computers and software; and planning formats and project sizes. The instructor will be bringing in examples of his own work and will discuss how these developed. He will offer many recommendations as to how to begin writing; develop material to its final form; how to include photos, art, and documents; and will discuss the possibilities and advantages of home publishing. You will be given brief writing and outlining exercises that should help you get started on your own memoirs, so please bring pad and pencils to class.

Fun with Poetry!

Prompts and exercises will be used in class to encourage sharing of ideas and creative works. In addition, information will be provided about current techniques and what poets are doing now. The class will have a chance to look at current publications, such as Poets and Writers and American Poetry Review.
