How to Apply to Bakersfield College

Bakersfield College welcomes your application for enrollment as a F-1 visa student, and our office will make every effort to assist you in the process.

  • All International students on visa must be 18 years of age as of the beginning of the semester they are enrolling.
  • All students must have the equivalent of a US high school diploma.
  • Copy of original official transcript of academic records translated in English.
  • A completed statement of financial support including a bank statement.
  • One page personal statement regarding your current educational goals.
  • Non-refundable $ 50 fee in the form of U.S. Money Order or Cashier Check payable to Bakersfield College International Education.
  • F-1 students are required to pay a non-resident tuition and enrollment fee. 
  • Deadlines for applications:
                April 15 for the fall and October 15 for the spring semesters.

  • Note: Registered Nursing and Radiology Technology  major students will be admitted as a PRE-RN/ RT majors. Upon completion of the pre-requisites, students will be able to apply to the above programs.

CRITERIA FOR ACCEPTANCE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:

  • ENGLISH PROFICIENCY

    Please be advised that although we have an ESL Program, classes are conducted in English. Therefore, it is necessary for the prospective F-1 visa student to be reasonably proficient in reading, writing and speaking English. New students must demonstrate proficiency before being issued the I-20 by having official TOEFL scores, which are not more than two years old, sent to the International Student Program office. A minimum TOEFL score of 133 (Computer Based Test) 450 (Paper Based Test), or 45 (Internet Based Test) is required.

    The TOEFL test is not required if a student has:

    1. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test score of 4.5 or higher (recognized as an entrance requirement by U.S., Canadian, British, Irish, Australian, and New Zealand universities) (www.ielts.org).

    2. TOEIC score of 620 or higher (www.ets.org).

    3. iTEP score of 3-3.5 ( www.bostoneducational.com )

    4.  EIKEN (STEP) test score of 2a or higher (test offered by Japanese high schools and universities) (stepeiken.org)

    5.  Level 109 or higher at ELS centers in the US or overseas (www.els.com).

    6.  Level 5 or higher at ASPECT schools (www.aspectworld.com).

    7. Level 5 or higher at LSI schools (www.languagesystems.com).  

    8. Is a resident and studied in an English speaking country. 

    9. Completed "O" or "A" levels in a former British colony (e.g. Singapore).

    10. Studied English language as an exchange student for at least two semesters in one of the US schools and achieved grade "C" or higher.

    11. Is transferring directly from an academic program at a U.S. college or university.

  • Foreign students who have attended a college in the United States must show satisfactory academic progress with no grade less than "C".
  • All visa students must participate in the Assessment and Orientation program before enrolling in classes. www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/academic/schedule/sp09/assessment.
As soon as the above documents are received, it will be reviewed and an admission decision will be reached. Admitted students will receive notification of their acceptance from the admissions office. With this admission notification students can meet with the American Embassy to apply for a student visa. Students who are accepted and admitted should plan to arrive in Bakersfield about 30 days prior to start of the semester in order to complete assessment and Orientation and to find a suitable place to live. Students must make their own housing arrangements. There are no dormitories or on-campus housing available at BC. However, many apartment buildings are located in a walking distance from BC.

COSTS

Estimated expenses:

Evidence of financial support will be required prior to your acceptance at BC.  A bank statement showing that the student or his/her sponsor has sufficient funds on deposit must be included with the application. Student must be fully prepared to meet all necessary financial obligations for the time they are in the U.S.

International student out of state tuition for year 2011-2012 is :currency

  • Out of state tuition.........   $ 190.00 each unit
  • Capital Outlay Fee ........   $   30.00 each unit
  • Enrollment Fee..............   $   46.00 each unit
  • Health and student center fees are $19 each semester
  • Textbooks and supplies...  $  500.00 average per semester
  • Housing (off-campus) and living expenses estimated at about $800 per month 

Fees are payable at the time of registration and subject to change at any given year.

Tuition may be paid in cash, travelers checks, credit card, or  personal check with US account.
