Public and Human Services Career Pathway
Child Development
Child Development Program provides a quality educational experience that will prepare a student for direct entry into the workforce, an associate degree, or transfer to a four-year college or university. In addition to the regular schedule of courses, the Early Childhood Development Distance Learning Program provides required courses via televised broadcasts and on-line. The Early Childhood Education Employment Readiness Academy provides required courses in a one semester intensive schedule.

Culinary Arts
This program emphasized quality food production and service in commercial and institutional food service operations. Course work includes practical training in the campus restaurant, the Renegade Room.

Dietetic Services
This program provides training for students planning employment in the food service department of a health care operation. Courses in this program met State of California Department of Health Services certification requirements.

Food & Nutrition Program
An associate in science degree shall be earned by students who satisfactorily complete one of the following programs options: Child Nutrition Program Management or Food Service Management. General requirements for an associate in science degree shall be met as specified in the graduation section of the current catalog. The Professional Management Development Program is also available from the National Restaurant Association.

Human Services
The field of human services is very broad. It is concerned with meeting human needs and improving the overall quality of people’s lives. The field is interdisciplinary, meaning that the knowledge from a variety of other fields of study is applied to the overall goal of helping people. Employment of human services workers is expected to grow much faster than most occupations.
The primary purpose of the human services worker is to assist individuals, families, and/or communities to function as effectively as possible. Human services workers can be both professionals and paraprofessionals, depending on their academic training. The human services degree from Bakersfield College prepares students for entry-level positions.
Human services workers work in a variety of different settings including group homes and halfway houses; correctional, disability, and community mental health centers; family, child, and youth service agencies, and programs dealing with alcoholism, drug abuse, family violence and the fast-growing field of aging. Working conditions vary depending on the setting and the type of organization, including government, non-profit, and for-profit agencies.

Correctional Program
Corrections are part of the criminal justice system responsible for juveniles and adults who have been charged with or convicted of a criminal offense. It involves working with the individual at the local, state, or federal level of government. The Corrections professional subscribe to philosophy of protecting society and aiding in the rehabilitation of the offender. The correctional Administration Program is designed to expose the student to different aspects of the correctional system. This pattern of coursework has been endorsed by the Joint Apprenticeship committee of the California department of Corrections, California Youth Authority, and the California Correctional Peace Officers Association as a program, which would be of benefit to apprentices, and correctional peace officers.

Fire Technology
Bakersfield College’s Regional fire Technology Program is authorized by the California Fire Service Training and Education System. Programs of study lead to certificates in Fire Technology with specialization in hazardous materials, wildland fire control, and rescue and life safety. Certifications include Fire Officer, Chief Officer, Driver/Operator, Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Volunteer Firefighter. Certificates meet the National Fire Protection Association professional qualification standards.

Law Enforcement
PC 832 Arrest and Control Techniques
Provides student with the required competencies and certifications in PC 832, Arrest & Control Techniques. This is a one course, 40 hours. (STC/POST Certificate)

PC 832 Firearms Training
Provides students with the required competencies and certifications in PC 832 Firearms. This is a one course, 24 hours. Students must be legally able to possess a firearm. ADMJ B60, PC 832, Arrest and Control Techniques course must be completed prior to enrollment in this course. (STC/POST Certificate)

Campus Security
Provides students with the required competencies in accordance with SB 1626. This is a one course, 32 hours.

Peace officers’ Basic Academy (P.O.S.T.)
Provides student with competencies set forth by P.O.S.T. to obtain a position as an entry-level peace officer. Covers introduction to law enforcement, administration of justice, criminal law, evidence and investigation, community-police relations, patrol procedures, traffic control, juvenile procedures, physical fitness, defensive tactics, forearms, first aid and CPR, vehicle operations, domestic violence, field training and evaluation, and other related basic law enforcement topics. This is a one course, 760 hours. (POST Certificate)
